It is a water-soluble radiographic contrast media for cholecystography and intravenous cholangiography. It has a role as a radioopaque medium. It is a secondary carboxamide, a member of benzoic acids and an organoiodine compound. It is a conjugate acid of an adipiodone(2-).

How it is made

From benzoic acid by (1) nitration to 3-nitrobenzoic acid, (2) reduction by means of stannous chloride or other reducing agent to 3-aminobenzoic acid, (3) iodination with iodine monochloride in acetic acid to the 2,4,6-triiodo derivative, or (4) acylation of the amino group with adipoyl chloride.
