About cosmetic ingredients
Cosmetic ingredients are grouped here by what they do in a formula, using the function names of the EU CosIng database and the INCI naming system that labels on cosmetic products follow. Emollients, emulsifiers, humectants, preservatives, UV filters, cleansing surfactants, thickeners, antioxidants, skin and hair conditioning agents and colorants each have their own page, and many ingredients carry several functions.

The INCI name is the most useful identifier in this market. One INCI name, for example Cetearyl Alcohol or Glyceryl Stearate, can cover products from many manufacturers that differ in purity, chain distribution, physical form and origin. Search by INCI name, CAS number or function, then compare suppliers on the grade details.
Cosmetic buyers usually need more documents than industrial buyers. Expect to ask for a technical data sheet, certificate of analysis, safety data sheet, the INCI name, the regulatory status in your markets (for example the annexes of the EU Cosmetics Regulation that restrict preservatives, colorants and UV filters), allergen and impurity statements, and microbiological limits. Natural and organic brands also ask about origin, RSPO certification for palm-derived ingredients, COSMOS approval, vegan status and whether the ingredient was tested on animals. Brands selling in several regions should check each market, since approvals and maximum concentrations differ between the EU, the US, China, India and others.

Frequently asked questions
Quick answers about buying cosmetic ingredients on CompoundList.
What is an INCI name and why does it matter?
INCI is the International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients, the naming system used on cosmetic labels in most markets. Searching by INCI name finds every supplier of an ingredient, even when they use different trade names.
Where do the function names come from?
Functions follow the EU CosIng database, which lists the technical functions of cosmetic ingredients, for example emollient, emulsifying or preservative. Many ingredients have several functions and appear on several pages.
Which documents should a cosmetic ingredient supplier provide?
Usually a technical data sheet, certificate of analysis, safety data sheet, regulatory and allergen statements, impurity data, microbiological limits and, if relevant, origin, RSPO, COSMOS, vegan and animal testing statements.
Are cosmetic ingredient approvals the same everywhere?
No. Preservatives, UV filters, colorants and some actives have different approvals and maximum concentrations in the EU, the US, China, India and other markets. Check each market where your product will be sold.
