About polymers and resins

Polymers are long chain molecules built from repeating units, and they include plastics, rubbers, fibres, adhesives, coatings binders and water-soluble polymers. This section covers the whole chain, from monomers such as ethylene, propylene, styrene, acrylates, vinyl chloride, caprolactam and diisocyanates, through thermoplastics and resins, to the plasticizers, stabilisers, flame retardants, rubber chemicals, initiators and curing agents that turn a base polymer into a working material.

Read more about polymers and resins

Polymers are traded on grade data sheets rather than on chemical identity alone. Two polyethylenes with the same CAS number can behave very differently, so buyers compare melt flow index, density, molecular weight, comonomer, additive package and the processing method a grade is designed for, such as injection moulding, film blowing or extrusion. For resins, viscosity, solids content and functional group content such as epoxy equivalent weight or hydroxyl value matter most.

When you request quotes, give the polymer type, the producer grade you want to match or the key properties, the processing method, and any approvals you need, such as food contact compliance under EU Regulation 10/2011 or US FDA rules, medical grade testing, or UL flammability ratings. Ask about prime versus off-grade or wide-spec material, and about recycled or bio-based alternatives if sustainability targets apply.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers about buying polymers and resins on CompoundList.

How do I compare polymer grades from different producers?

Compare the data sheet properties that matter for your process, such as melt flow index, density, mechanical properties and additive package, and run a trial. The same polymer type can behave very differently from grade to grade.

What is prime, off-grade and wide-spec polymer?

Prime material meets the producer's grade specification. Off-grade and wide-spec material falls outside it, for example after a production change, and is sold cheaper with fewer guarantees. Always ask which one is offered.

Which approvals matter for food packaging?

In the EU, plastics in contact with food must comply with Regulation 10/2011, and in the US with FDA rules for food contact substances. Ask suppliers for a declaration of compliance covering the polymer and its additives.

How are polymers classified for customs?

Polymers in primary forms, such as pellets, powders and solutions, fall under HS chapter 39, mainly headings 3901 to 3914. Monomers are classified with organic chemicals in chapter 29.
