About agrochemicals

Agrochemicals protect crops and feed them. This section covers the active ingredients of herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, nematicides and rodenticides, plant growth regulators, fertilizers and micronutrients, and the adjuvants, safeners and synergists that make crop protection products work better in the field.

The trade has two layers. Technical grade active ingredients, often called TC or technical, are made by synthesis plants and sold to formulators. Formulators then make the products farmers use, such as emulsifiable concentrates, suspension concentrates, wettable powders and water dispersible granules. Fertilizers follow a similar path from bulk producers to blenders, distributors and growers.

Crop protection products can only be sold where they are registered, and registration rules decide which technical source a formulator may use. If you plan to register a generic product, ask suppliers for a five-batch analysis, the impurity profile and whether their source has been assessed as equivalent to the reference product in your target country. Specifications usually follow FAO and WHO pesticide specifications and are tested with CIPAC methods. Several actives are banned or restricted in some regions, and some are covered by the Rotterdam Convention prior informed consent procedure, so check the status in both the exporting and the importing country before you buy.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers about buying agrochemicals on CompoundList.

What does technical grade or TC mean?

It is the active ingredient as made by the synthesis plant, at a defined minimum purity, before it is formulated into a product for farmers. Formulators buy technical material and turn it into concentrates, powders or granules.

Can I import a pesticide that is not registered in my country?

Usually only for registration trials or re-export, and often with a permit. Selling or using an unregistered crop protection product is illegal in most countries. Check with your national regulator before ordering.

What documents do I need for generic registration?

Regulators typically ask for a five-batch analysis from the manufacturing site, the impurity profile, the manufacturing process summary and data showing equivalence to the reference product. Ask suppliers whether they can share these under a confidentiality agreement.

Are fertilizers covered too?

Yes. Bulk nitrogen, phosphate and potash fertilizers, compound NPK grades, water soluble specialty fertilizers and micronutrients, including chelates, are listed in the fertilizers group with their nutrient contents.
