About oil, gas and lubricants

The oil and gas industry uses chemicals from the drilling rig to the refinery and the engine. This page groups them by function, covering drilling fluid additives, corrosion inhibitors, scale inhibitors, hydrogen sulfide scavengers, demulsifiers, biocides, lubricant additives, synthetic base oils and fuel additives.

Upstream, drilling fluids cool the bit, carry cuttings and control well pressure, using weighting agents, viscosifiers, fluid loss additives and shale inhibitors. Production chemicals keep oil and gas flowing by preventing corrosion, scale, wax, asphaltenes, hydrates and emulsions, and by removing hydrogen sulfide. Midstream pipelines need corrosion inhibitors, drag reducing agents and biocides. Downstream, refineries use process chemicals and catalysts, and fuel and lubricant makers blend additives into finished products that meet engine and equipment specifications.

Most production chemicals are formulated blends designed for specific fields, so suppliers usually ask for fluid analysis, temperature, pressure and water chemistry and then test products in the lab and in the field. Offshore operations add environmental approvals for chemicals discharged to sea, and many regions limit the toxicity and persistence of oilfield chemicals. Lubricant additives and fuel additives must perform in industry specification tests. When you post a request, describe the application, the conditions and the current product and treat rate, and state the volume and delivery point. Suppliers can then propose a programme and quote for drums, IBCs or bulk delivery to your field, terminal or plant.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers about sourcing oil, gas and lubricants chemicals on CompoundList.

Why are oilfield chemicals usually formulated blends?

Field conditions such as temperature, pressure, water chemistry and crude type vary widely, so suppliers tune blends of actives and solvents to each field and test them before supply.

Which standards apply to drilling fluid materials?

API specifications, such as API Specification 13A for barite and bentonite, define quality requirements for many drilling fluid materials. Ask suppliers for test results against them.

Are offshore chemicals regulated?

Yes. Many offshore regions require environmental approval of chemicals that may be discharged, based on toxicity, biodegradation and bioaccumulation data.

Do you list lubricant and fuel additives?

Yes. Lubricant additives, synthetic base oils and fuel additives have their own function pages linked to suppliers.

Request for quote

Cannot find the oil, gas and lubricants chemicals you need?

Post one buy request with the grade, quantity and destination. Matching suppliers send you quotes, and your contact details stay private until you accept one.
