About plastics and polymers

Plastics and rubber products depend on a chain of chemicals. Monomers are polymerised with catalysts and initiators, and the resulting polymer is protected and modified by an additive package before it becomes a pipe, film, bottle, car part, cable, tyre or toy. This page groups the chemicals used along that chain, covering monomers, initiators, curing agents and crosslinkers, plasticizers, heat stabilizers, antioxidants, UV stabilizers, flame retardants, blowing agents, slip and antiblock agents, antistatic agents and nucleating agents.

Additives are often used at less than one percent, yet they decide whether a polymer survives processing at high temperature, keeps its colour in sunlight, passes fire tests, releases from the mould or stays clear. Compounders and masterbatch producers combine additives with polymers and pigments, and converters choose grades by processing method and end use.

Regulation and sustainability shape the market. Several low molecular weight phthalate plasticizers, lead stabilisers, some organotin compounds and older brominated flame retardants are restricted in many regions, while food contact rules such as EU Regulation 10/2011 and US FDA regulations limit which additives can be used in packaging. Recycling targets increase demand for additives that stabilise recycled resins and for products that do not interfere with recycling streams. When you post a request, give the polymer, process and application, the current product and loading, and the approvals you need, so suppliers can propose a matching additive and supply samples for trials.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers about sourcing plastics and polymers chemicals on CompoundList.

Which additives does a plastic usually need?

Most polymers need antioxidants and processing stabilisers. Depending on use, they also need UV stabilisers, flame retardants, plasticizers, slip and antistatic agents, nucleating agents or blowing agents.

Which plasticizers replace restricted phthalates?

Common alternatives include DOTP (DEHT), DINCH, citrates, adipates and high molecular weight phthalates such as DINP and DIDP where they are allowed. Check the rules for your end use.

Can I get food contact compliance documents?

Yes, ask for a declaration of compliance under EU Regulation 10/2011, the relevant US FDA regulations or other national rules for each additive or polymer grade.

Are monomers and initiators covered too?

Yes. Monomers, initiators, catalysts, curing agents and crosslinkers have their own function pages, linked to the polymers and resins categories.

Request for quote

Cannot find the plastics and polymers chemicals you need?

Post one buy request with the grade, quantity and destination. Matching suppliers send you quotes, and your contact details stay private until you accept one.
