About catalysts and auxiliaries

Catalysts speed up chemical reactions without being consumed, and auxiliaries are the process chemicals that make manufacturing steps work. This section covers precious metal and base metal catalysts, organometallic compounds, ligands for metal catalysis, acid, base and phase transfer catalysts, polymerisation initiators, industrial oxidising and reducing agents, and the auxiliaries used in textile and leather processing.

Catalyst buyers range from refineries and petrochemical plants that change out tonnes of heterogeneous catalyst every few years, to pharmaceutical and fine chemical producers who buy grams to kilograms of palladium complexes and chiral ligands. In both cases the catalyst is chosen by performance in a specific reaction, so suppliers often provide screening kits, samples and technical support.

For heterogeneous catalysts, specify the active metal and loading, the support, the form (powder, extrudates, spheres or pellets), particle size and, for powders, whether the product is supplied wet to reduce fire risk. For homogeneous catalysts and ligands, ask for purity, metal content, appearance, air and moisture sensitivity and storage conditions. Precious metal catalysts are usually priced on the metal content plus a fabrication charge, and many suppliers offer to refine spent catalyst and credit the recovered metal. Agree these terms before you order.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers about buying catalysts and auxiliaries on CompoundList.

How are precious metal catalysts priced?

Usually on the precious metal content at the market price on an agreed date, plus a fabrication charge for making the catalyst. Many suppliers also refine spent catalyst and credit the recovered metal.

What information should I give when asking for a catalyst?

Describe the reaction, substrate, solvent, temperature and scale, plus the catalyst you use today if any. Suppliers can then propose a catalyst and often provide samples or screening kits.

Why are some catalysts supplied wet?

Dry palladium on carbon and similar catalysts can ignite flammable solvents and hydrogen. Supplying them with about 50 percent water makes them much safer to handle. Prices are quoted on a dry basis.

Do textile auxiliaries need to meet brand requirements?

Many apparel and footwear brands require that chemicals used in production comply with a manufacturing restricted substances list, such as the ZDHC MRSL. Ask suppliers for conformance certificates.
