About surfactants and detergents

Surfactants are molecules with a water-loving head and an oil-loving tail. They gather at surfaces, lower surface tension, and let water wet, clean, foam, emulsify and disperse. This section groups them by the charge of the head group, anionic, nonionic, cationic and amphoteric, and adds soaps, builders and chelants, bleaching agents and hydrotropes, the other main ingredients of cleaning products.

Read more about surfactants and detergents

Surfactants serve far more than detergents. They are used in personal care, crop protection formulations, textiles and leather, paints and inks, oil fields, mining, food, pharmaceuticals and emulsion polymerisation. Many are produced from fatty alcohols and fatty acids based on palm kernel, coconut or tallow, or from petrochemical alcohols and alkylbenzene, and the raw material base affects both price and sustainability claims.

Surfactants are usually sold as solutions or pastes with a stated active matter, so compare quotes per kilogram of active content. In your request, state the chemistry, the active matter, the form, the carbon chain distribution, the degree of ethoxylation where relevant and the application. Ask for biodegradability data, aquatic toxicity, the content of 1,4-dioxane in ethoxylated products, and certificates such as RSPO for palm derivatives or ecolabel acceptability if you sell labelled products.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers about buying surfactants and detergents on CompoundList.

How should I compare surfactant prices?

Surfactants are sold as solutions, pastes or powders with different active matter. Divide the price by the active content to compare offers per kilogram of active surfactant.

What does the EO number mean?

It is the average number of ethylene oxide units added to the molecule, for example SLES 2EO or a C12-14 alcohol with 7EO. It changes solubility, foam and mildness, so match the EO number to your formula.

Why do buyers ask about 1,4-dioxane?

1,4-Dioxane can form as a by-product of ethoxylation. Several markets limit it in cosmetics and cleaning products, so suppliers of ethoxylated surfactants should state the level in each batch.

Which surfactants suit ecolabel products?

Ecolabel schemes favour readily biodegradable surfactants with low aquatic toxicity, such as alkyl polyglucosides, many fatty alcohol ethoxylates and sulfates, and biodegradable chelants. Check the ingredient lists of the scheme you use.
