About agriculture and crop protection

Modern agriculture uses chemistry to protect crops from weeds, insects, mites, diseases, nematodes and rodents, to regulate plant growth, and to supply nutrients. This page groups agricultural chemicals by function, covering herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, acaricides, nematicides, rodenticides, plant growth regulators, fertilizers and micronutrients, and formulation adjuvants.

The crop protection market works in two steps. Manufacturers produce technical grade active ingredients, and formulators turn them into products such as emulsifiable concentrates, suspension concentrates and water dispersible granules that distributors sell to farmers. Generic producers in India and China supply a large share of off-patent actives worldwide, while research-based companies develop new modes of action. Fertilizers follow their own commodity markets, with bulk nitrogen, phosphate and potash traded in vessel loads and specialty water-soluble fertilizers sold in bags.

Registration is the central issue. A crop protection product can only be sold where it is registered, and the registration often names the approved sources of the technical active ingredient. Buyers who want to register generic products need data such as a five-batch analysis and proof of equivalence. Some actives are banned or restricted in certain regions, and several are listed under the Rotterdam Convention, so trade partners must check status in both exporting and importing countries. Use the function pages to find actives and suppliers, and state the grade, purity, quantity, packaging and registration documents you need when you post a request.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers about sourcing agriculture and crop protection chemicals on CompoundList.

Can I buy technical grade pesticides on CompoundList?

Suppliers list technical actives and formulations. Purchases must comply with the registration and import rules of the destination country, and many products can only be sold to registered companies.

What documents support generic registration?

Regulators usually require a five-batch analysis, impurity profile, manufacturing process summary and proof of equivalence to the reference product. Ask suppliers whether they can provide them under a confidentiality agreement.

Are banned pesticides listed?

Substance pages may exist for banned actives for reference, but offers must comply with the law in both countries. Report listings that break the rules.

Do you cover fertilizers and micronutrients?

Yes. Fertilizers, water soluble specialty grades and micronutrients, including chelates, have their own function page with nutrient contents on each substance.
