About dyes and pigments

Colorants are divided into two families. Dyes dissolve in the medium they colour or in the dye bath, and they bond to or penetrate the substrate, which suits textiles, leather, paper and inks. Pigments stay as insoluble particles dispersed in a binder, which suits paints, plastics, printing inks, coatings and building materials. This section covers both families, plus optical brighteners, fluorescent dyes and the intermediates used to make colorants.

Colorants are best identified by their Colour Index generic name and number, such as C.I. Pigment Blue 15:3 or C.I. Reactive Red 195, because trade names differ from one producer to another. The Colour Index name tells you the chemical class and the shade family, and it lets you compare offers from several suppliers on a like for like basis.

When you request quotes, give the Colour Index name, the application, the required shade and strength against a standard, fastness requirements and the form you need, for example powder, granules, liquid or press cake. Ask for a lab dip or a drawdown against your reference. Check compliance with the rules that apply to your end use, such as restrictions on azo dyes that can release listed aromatic amines, heavy metal limits for toys and food packaging, and the restricted substance lists used by textile and apparel brands.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers about buying dyes and pigments on CompoundList.

What is the difference between a dye and a pigment?

A dye dissolves during application and colours the material from within, which suits textiles, paper and leather. A pigment stays as insoluble particles held in a binder or polymer, which suits paints, plastics and printing inks.

Why should I use the Colour Index name in my request?

Trade names differ between producers, while the Colour Index generic name, such as C.I. Pigment Blue 15:3, identifies the colorant class and shade family. It lets several suppliers quote the same product.

How do I compare strength between offers?

Ask each supplier to state strength against a standard, usually 100 percent, and request a lab dip or drawdown against your own reference. A cheaper product with lower strength can cost more per dyed or coloured kilogram.

Which rules apply to colorants in consumer goods?

Common checks cover azo dyes that can release listed aromatic amines, heavy metals in toys and packaging, food contact approvals and the restricted substance lists of textile brands. Ask suppliers for compliance statements for your end use.
