About food and feed additives

Food additives are substances added in small amounts to keep food safe, stable, appealing and nutritious. Feed additives do the same for animal nutrition. This section groups them by function, from preservatives, antioxidants and sweeteners to acidulants, colours, emulsifiers, thickeners, nutrients, flavour enhancers, processing aids and feed additives. Where an additive has an E number in the EU or an INS number under the Codex Alimentarius, the substance page shows it.

Food grade is a set of commitments, not just a purity figure. A food grade additive must meet an official specification, such as the EU additive specifications, the Food Chemicals Codex or the JECFA monographs, and it must be made, packed and stored under food safety controls. Buyers usually ask for a certificate from a recognised food safety scheme such as FSSC 22000, BRCGS or ISO 22000, along with allergen, GMO, halal and kosher statements as needed.

Approvals and maximum levels differ by country and by food category, so an additive allowed in one market may be restricted or banned in another. Check the national rules for your product before you buy. Feed additives have their own approval systems, and in many markets they must be authorised for the target species. The same chemical often appears in technical, food, feed and pharmaceutical grades, so state the grade clearly in every request.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers about buying food and feed additives on CompoundList.

What is an E number?

It is the code given to food additives approved in the European Union, such as E 211 for sodium benzoate. The Codex Alimentarius uses the same numbers without the E, called INS numbers. Substance pages show the number when one applies.

What makes a chemical food grade?

It must meet an official food additive specification, such as the EU specifications, the Food Chemicals Codex or JECFA, and be produced and handled under food safety controls. Ask for the certificate of analysis and food safety certification.

Is an additive approved in one country approved everywhere?

No. Approvals and maximum levels differ by country and by food category. Check the rules in each market where your product will be sold before you place an order.

Do feed additives need separate approval?

In many markets, yes. Feed additives are authorised for specific uses and often for specific animal species, and suppliers usually hold feed safety certification such as FAMI-QS or GMP+.
