About organic chemicals
Organic chemicals are carbon compounds, and they make up the largest part of the chemical trade by number of products. On CompoundList they are grouped by their main functional group, the part of the molecule that decides how it reacts, how it is handled and how customs classify it. Alcohols, acids, esters, amines, aldehydes, ketones, ethers, halogenated compounds and heterocycles each have their own page, and one substance can appear in more than one group when it carries several functional groups.

Grouping by structure helps buyers who think in chemistry rather than in end uses. A purchasing team replacing one solvent with another, a process chemist looking for a cheaper amine, or a trader checking which HS heading applies all start from the functional group. Most of these chemicals fall under chapter 29 of the Harmonized System, where headings follow the same functional groups, so the structure pages also link to the matching HS codes and their trade data.
When you request quotes, give the CAS number, the grade (technical, industrial, pharmaceutical, food or reagent), the minimum assay, any limits on water, colour or specific impurities, the quantity and the packaging you can receive. Ask for a certificate of analysis from a recent batch and a current safety data sheet, and check whether the material is regulated as a precursor, a dangerous good or a substance of very high concern in the country of delivery.

Frequently asked questions
Quick answers about buying organic chemicals on CompoundList.
How are organic chemicals grouped on CompoundList?
By their main functional group, such as alcohols, acids, esters, amines or heterocycles. A substance with several functional groups can appear in more than one group, and it also appears under its application categories, for example solvents or pharmaceutical intermediates.
Which HS codes cover organic chemicals?
Most single organic compounds fall under chapter 29 of the Harmonized System. Headings follow the functional group, for example 2905 for acyclic alcohols, 2915 for saturated monocarboxylic acids and 2933 for nitrogen heterocycles. Mixtures and petroleum fractions are usually classified elsewhere.
What should I include in a request for quote?
The CAS number or a clear name, the grade, the minimum purity, any impurity limits, the quantity, the packaging and the delivery country. Adding the end use helps suppliers propose the right grade and documents.
Which documents should a supplier provide?
A certificate of analysis from a recent batch and a current safety data sheet at minimum. Depending on the use, also ask for a technical data sheet, a statement on regulatory status, and food, pharmaceutical or halal and kosher certificates where they apply.
