About food and beverage

Food and beverage manufacturers use a wide range of additives and ingredients to keep products safe, appealing and nutritious. This page groups them by function, covering preservatives, antioxidants, sweeteners, acidulants, colours, flavours, emulsifiers, thickeners and gelling agents, nutrients, flavour enhancers and processing aids such as raising agents and anti-caking agents.

Food additives are regulated by positive lists. In the EU, additives need an E number and approval for each food category, in the US they need food additive approval or GRAS status, and other countries follow the Codex Alimentarius or their own national rules. Maximum levels, labelling and permitted forms differ between markets, so a formula that complies in one country may need changes for another. Purity specifications come from the EU additive specifications, the Food Chemicals Codex and JECFA monographs.

Food buyers also expect strong supplier controls. Typical requirements include certification to a food safety scheme such as FSSC 22000, BRCGS or ISO 22000, allergen, GMO and irradiation statements, halal and kosher certificates, country of origin, heavy metal and microbiological results, and traceability from raw material to batch. Clean label trends have increased demand for natural colours, natural flavours, fermentation-derived ingredients and plant-based emulsifiers and thickeners. When you post a request, give the additive name and E or INS number if known, the grade and specification, packaging, the certificates you need and the volume. Suppliers that list food grade products can then reply with matching offers and documents.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers about sourcing food and beverage chemicals on CompoundList.

How do I find an additive by its E number?

Search for the E or INS number, for example E 330, or the additive name. Substance pages show the number when the additive is approved in the EU or listed by Codex.

Which certificates do food ingredient suppliers usually hold?

Common ones are FSSC 22000, BRCGS or ISO 22000 for food safety, and halal and kosher certificates. Ask for allergen, GMO and origin statements in your request.

Is an additive approved everywhere once it has an E number?

No. An E number shows EU approval only. Other countries have their own lists and limits, so check the rules in each market where your product will be sold.

Can I buy natural colours and flavours here?

Yes. Natural colours, flavour ingredients and extracts are listed with the food grade suppliers that offer them. Ask for natural status certificates and the source material.

Request for quote

Cannot find the food and beverage chemicals you need?

Post one buy request with the grade, quantity and destination. Matching suppliers send you quotes, and your contact details stay private until you accept one.
