It has been isolated from several plant species such as Anaphalis nubigena and Jatropha ribifolia. It has a role as a volatile oil component, an antibacterial agent and a plant metabolite. It is a sesquiterpene and a carbotricyclic compound. It is an enantiomer of a (+)-alpha-gurjunene.
