C. retusa (which contains monocrotaline) has been widely used as a dye plant and possibly as a vegetable in some parts of East Africa. In West Africa the root is crushed and mixed with spices as a colic remedy, and a decoction of the leaf, or sometimes the fresh juice of the plant, is taken for the relief of fever. In India, the root has been used as a remedy for hemoptysis, the leaf as a vegetable and a preparation of the plant as a local application in skin diseases.
