How it is made

Hydrolysis of 2,4-dinitro-1-chlorobenzene with sodium hydroxide.

(a) By heating phenol with dilute sulfuric acid, cooling the product, and then nitrating, keeping the temperature approximately 50 ยฐC, (b) by nitration with mixed acid with careful temperature control. (Dinitrophenol)

2,4-Dinitrochlorobenzene is hydrolyzed by heating with 6% aqueous sodium hydroxide at 95 - 100 ยฐC for 4 hr. The product is precipitated by addition of acid, filtered off, and washed to remove acid and also a small quantity of the more soluble 2,6-isomer. The yield is 95 %.
