It is used for brazing, local heating & in glass industry.

In chem indust, acetylene is used as feedstock in mfr of vinyl chloride, acrylonitrile, synthetic rubber, vinyl acetate, trichloroethylene, acrylate, butyrolactone, 1,4-butanediol, vinyl alkyl ethers, pyrrolidone, etc.

Industrial uses: Intermediate, Fuel, Heat transferring agent, Fuel agents, Monomers, Other.

Consumer uses: Intermediate, Fuel, Other.

How it is made

Recovery from refinery gases, from petrochemical raw materials by thermal processes.

Manufactured from calcium carbide and water: Eastman, United States of America patent 3017259 (1962 to Texaco), from methane: Anderson, United States of America patent 3051639 (1962 to Union Carbide).

Acetylene is obtained from gaseous hydrocarbons (eg methane) or liquid hydrocarbons (eg petroleum products) by partial combustion, electric arc or by high temp regenerative processes. Acetylene must then be separated from resultant gas mixture.
