About specialty and electronic gases
Specialty and electronic gases are used to deposit, etch, dope and clean the layers of semiconductor chips, displays and solar cells. The group includes silane, disilane and dichlorosilane, ammonia and nitrous oxide for nitride and oxide films, nitrogen trifluoride for chamber cleaning, tungsten hexafluoride for metal deposition, fluorocarbons such as tetrafluoromethane, hexafluoroethane and octafluorocyclobutane for etching, hydrogen chloride, hydrogen bromide and chlorine for etching, and dopant gases such as phosphine, arsine and diborane.

These gases are supplied in high purity cylinders, ton containers and bulk trailers, often through on-site gas cabinets and delivery systems. Purity is typically 5N to 6N, with strict limits on moisture, oxygen, metals and specific impurities.
Many electronic gases are toxic, pyrophoric or corrosive, so they need special cylinders, valves and safety systems, and some are classified as weapons-related dual-use items. Fluorinated gases with high global warming potential face phase-down rules and abatement requirements. Ask for the purity specification, cylinder type and valve, filling quantity, certificate of analysis per cylinder and the supply chain for neon, helium and other gases that have seen shortages.
