What is Aldrin?
Plain description, key identifiers and synonyms
Aldrin is an organochlorine compound resulting from the Diels-Alder reaction of hexachlorocyclopentadiene with norbornadiene. A proinsecticide (by epoxidation of the non-chlorinated double bond to give dieldrin), it was widely used as an insecticide before being banned in the 1970s as a persistent organic pollutant. It has a role as a proinsecticide and a persistent organic pollutant. It is an organochlorine insecticide and an organochlorine compound.

How it is made
Diels-alder addition of hexachlorocyclopentadiene with excess of bicycloheptadiene
Aldrin was manufactured by the Diels-Alder condensation of hexchloropentadiene with bicyclo[2.2.1]-2,5-heptadiene. The final condensation reaction was usually performed at approximately 120 °C and at atmospheric pressure. Excess bicycloheptadiene was removed by distillation. The final product was usually further purified by recrystallization.
