The major use of bromochloromethane is as fire-extinguishing fluid, its effectiveness per unit weight makes it suitable for use in aircraft and portable systems. It is also used as an explosion suppression agent, as a solvent, and as an intermediate in the manufacture of some insecticides (chlormephos).

Both dibromomethane and bromochloromethane (or mixtures of these two compounds) are used as solvents for bromination reactions, especially for the production of polybrominated aromatic compounds and polymers.

How it is made

Common routes for its production involve the partial replacement of chlorine in dichloromethane by a halogen exchange reaction using either bromine or hydrogen bromide. Both processes are carried out in the presence of aluminum or aluminum trihalide.
