It has a role as an anticoronaviral agent, an anxiolytic drug, a H1-receptor antagonist, a dermatologic drug and an antipruritic drug. It is a hydroxyether, a N-alkylpiperazine and a member of monochlorobenzenes.

Hydroxyzine is an antihistaminic diarylalkylpiperazine which is used as an anxiolytic. It has no cortical depressant activity, its anxiolytic action could be explained by its suppressive effect on neuronal activity in subcortical areas. A myorelaxant activity has also been demonstrated experimentally.

Hydroxyzine is a sedative piperazine antihistamine with anxiolytic, antiemetic, antisecretory, and bronchodilator effects.
