Uses and applications

What the substance is used for, by industry and function

M-Cresol and xylenol were registered by the Agency for use in the United States in 1980 for use as a bactericide for control of crown gall and olive knot on certain fruit and nut trees and ornamentals and the genetic/physiological disorder burr knot on apples. Currently, one product is registered which contains both m-cresol and xylenol.

For making synthetic resins, in disinfectants and fumigants, as industrial solvent, m-cresol in photographic developers, explosives.

Chemical intermediate for thymol used in cough/cold medicinals, synthetic pyrethroid insecticides, 3-methyl-6-t-butylphenol, trinitro-m-cresol for explosives, & phenolic resins (possible use), disinfectant ingredient (possible use), ore flotation agent (possible use), solvent (eg, for wire enamel).

How it is made

M-Cresol is produced synthetically from toluene. Toluene is chlorinated and the resulting chlorotoluene is hydrolyzed to a mixture of methylphenols. Purification by distillation gives a mixture of 3-methylphenol and 4-methylphenol since they have nearly identical boiling points. Reaction of this mixture with isobutylene under acid catalysis forms 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol and 2,4-di-tert-butyl-5-methylphenol, which can then be separated by fractional distillation and debutylated to give the corresponding 3- and 4-methylphenols.

A mixture of 3- and 4-methylphenols is also derived from petroleum crude and coal tars.

By fractional distillation of crude cresol (from coal tar), also synthetically. Method of purification: rectification.

M-Cresol is prepared from m-toluic acid or obtained from coal tar or petroleum. Crude cresol is obtained by distilling "gray phenic acid" at a temperature of 180 to 201 °C. The m-cresol may be separated from the crude or purified mixture by repeated fractional distillation in vacuo. It can also be prepared synthetically by diazotization of the specific toluidine, or by fusion of the corresponding toluenesulfonic acid with sodium hydroxide.
