It has a role as an antidepressant, an anxiolytic drug, a sedative, an adrenergic antagonist, a H1-receptor antagonist and a serotonin uptake inhibitor. Semicarbazide and 2-chloropyridine are condensed with loss of water and ammonia to form 1,2,4-triazolo[4,3-alpha]pyridin3(2H)-one, with on treatment with 1-(3-chlorophenyl)4,3-chlorophenyl)piperazine and sodamide, yields trazodone.
