Pharmacology

Barium is a naturally occurring alkaline metalloid element with atomic symbol Ba, atomic number 56, and atomic weight 137 that is only found in combination with other elements, typically barite (barium sulfate) and witherite (barium carbonate), or chemicals. Barium is used in many industrial processes, as well as in diagnostic testing, fireworks, and pesticides. It is characterized as a silvery white or yellow to white metallic solid that is odorless. Exposure occurs by inhalation, ingestion, or contact.

How it is made

Can be extracted by heating barium oxides with aluminum in vacuo at about 1200 °C & condensing barium vapor in the cool end of tube, or with ferrosilicon at temp about 50 °C higher. Lead-barium-calcium alloys can be prepd by electrolysis of fused chlorides in cell with molten lead as the cathode.

Barium is prepared commercially by the thermal reduction of barium oxide with aluminum.

To obtain the pure metal, barium oxide as starting material is reduced with ... silicon under vacuum at 1050 °C. The barium obtained (96-98.5%) is purified by vacuum distillation (99.5%).
