Uses and applications

What the substance is used for, by industry and function

Antiknock additive for gasoline, catalyst.

Coating for missiles and satellites, high temp lubricant, intermediate for high temp polymers, UV absorber.

Catalyst for vulcanization acceleration & polymerization, chem int for polymeric compounds.

Additive to fuel oils to improve efficiency of combustion and eliminate smoke.

Ferrocene... is effective in suppressing smoke by oxidizing soot in the gas phase as well as by pronounced charring of the substrate in the condensed phase.

Roles

  • additive
  • fuel additive

How it is made

The modern electrochemical synthesis of ferrocene consists of two stages: ... In the first stage, metallic iron is oxidized anodically in ethanol to iron(II)ethoxide. At the cathode, the acidic protons of ethanol are reduced and form gaseous hydrogen which evolves out of the liquid. The iron(II)ethoxide is sparingly soluble and precipitates on the rotating cathode. A fixed scraper separates the iron(II)ethoxide from the cathode surface and suspends it into the liquid. In the second stage the ethoxide reacts with cyclopentadiene to form ferrocene and ethanol, which is recycled to the first stage. Ferrocene is filtered from the solution and purified by sublimation.

Reaction of cyclopentadiene with reduced iron in the presence of metal oxides.

From ferrous chloride and cyclopentadiene sodium.
