Production of metallic and other fluorides, production of fluorocarbons, active constituent of fluoridating compounds used in drinking water, toothpastes, etc.

Gaseous surface treatment agent (polyethylene bottles).

Industrial uses: Drier, Semiconductor and photovoltaic agent, Other.

Consumer uses: Other, Semiconductor and photovoltaic agent.

Use classes: Inorganic substances, Metals/Elements.

Functional uses

  • Flow promoter
  • Wetting agent (non-aqueous)

Pharmacology

Fluorine is an element with atomic symbol F, atomic number 9, and atomic weight 19.0.

How it is made

The only method for the production of fluorine, both in the laboratory and in industry, is the electrolysis of anhydrous hydrogen fluoride containing dissolved potassium fluoride to achieve sufficient conductivity. It is important to work in as anhydrous a medium as possible, to prevent the formation of oxygen, or oxygen fluoride, at the anode. In all cases, hydrogen is produced at the cathode and fluorine at the anode.

Electrolysis of molten anhydrous hydrofluoric acid-potassium fluoride melts with special copper-bearing carbon anodes, steel cathodes and containers, and Monel screens.
