Added to polymer fibers, it acts as a swelling agent and increases affinity for dyes.

Moth repellant (former use), fire extinguishing fluids manufacture, laboratory chemical, military smoke candles and grenades, plasticizer for cellulose esters, insecticide and rubber process solvent, camphor substitute in nitrocellulose solvent, retardant in fermentation process.

Organic synthesis, retarding agent in fermentation, camphor substitute in nitrocellulose, pyrotechnics and smoke devices, solvent, explosives.

In the United States, about half of the hexachloroethane is used by the military for smoke-producing devices. Another use of hexachloroethane is in pyrotechnics. It inhibits the explosiveness of methane and the combustion of ammonium perchlorate. Hexachloroethane is used as an anthelmintic (to destroy tapeworms) in sheep and cattle. It is also added to the feed of ruminants to prevent methanogenesis and increase feed efficiency, and it is used as an ingredient in some fungicides and insecticides. Hexachloroethane is used in metal and alloy production. Hexachloroethane has various applications as a polymer additive. It has flameproofing qualities and increases affinity for dyes.

Industrial uses: Intermediate.

Pharmacology

Hexachloroethane is a crystalline, colorless, toxic, solid chlorinated hydrocarbon with a camphor-like odor and emits toxic and irritating fumes when heated to decomposition. Hexachloroethane was used as an anthelmintic to treat fascioliasis in cattle and sheep, in refining aluminum alloys, in smoke bombs and pyrotechnic and as a degassing agent and polymer additive. Exposure to this substance irritates the skin and mucous membranes, causes liver damage and acts as a central nervous system depressant. Hexachloroethane is reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen. (NCI05)

How it is made

By-product from the chlorination of ethylene and propylene with excess chlorine in vapor phase at 550-650 °C without a catalyst.

In the presence of catalysts, trichloroethylene is readily chlorinated to hexachloroethane.

Ethylene dichloride + chlorine (chlorination, byproduct of trichloroethylene/perchloroethylene production)
