How it is made

In the distillative fractionation of air ... the noble gases helium and neon become concentrated in the reflux condenser of (a) ... medium-pressure column together with the hydrogen contained in the air. In noble gas production there is an enrichment of up to about a thousand times the input value. Further concentration of the helium and neon to ca. 50 mol% is carried out in a small secondary column whose overhead condenser is cooled at ca. 80 deg K with evaporating liquid nitrogen.

A fraction can be drawn from the top of this column with a typical composition of 11 mol% He, 35 mol% Ne, 5 mol% H2 and 49 mol% N2 with a noble gas yield of over 90%. Further separation of this fraction is by ... condensation ... absorption ... (or) adsorption.

By fractional distillation of liquid air. It constitutes 0.0012% of normal air.
