Pharmacology

Putrescine is a four carbon diamine produced during tissue decomposition by the decarboxylation of amino acids. Polyamines, including putrescine, may act as growth factors that promote cell division, however, putrescine is toxic at high doses.

How it is made

1,4-Diaminobutane can be produced from 1,4-dichloro-2-butene or 1,4-dihalobutane (obtainable from the reaction of butadiene or tetrahydrofuran with a halogen), preferably via the phthalimido compounds. Alternatively, 1,4-diaminobutane can be prepared by hydrogenating succinodinitrile. (Putrescine)

Putrescine is produced on industrial scale by hydrogenation of succinonitrile, which is produced by addition of hydrogen cyanide to acrylonitrile.
