What the substance is used for, by industry and function
To remove chlorine from solution, as "antichlor" in bleaching of paper pulp, fixer in photography, mordant in dyeing & printing textiles, reducer in chrome dyeing, manufacture leather, extracting of silver from ores, bleaching bone, straw, ivory, reagent in analytical chemistry, antidote (cyanide poisoning).
Sequestrant in salt.
Photographic agent to dissolve silver halides, agent in chrome leather tanning, antichlor in bleaching cellulose products, source of sulfur dioxide in bleaching various products, preservative, chemical intermediate.
Use in foods restricted to 0.1%.

Pharmacology
Sodium Thiosulfate is a water soluble salt and reducing agent that reacts with oxidizing agents. Although its exact mechanism of action is unknown, thiosulfate likely provides an exogenous source of sulfur, thereby hastening the detoxification of cyanide through the enzyme rhodanese (thiosulfate cyanide sulfurtransferase) which converts cyanide to the relatively nontoxic, excretable thiocyanate ion. In addition, this agent neutralizes the reactive alkylating species of nitrogen mustard, thereby decreasing skin toxicity related to nitrogen mustard extravasation. (NCI04)
How it is made
By-product liquor from sodium sulfide production is reacted with sulfur dioxide to yield sodium thiosulfate, or organic nitro compounds are boiled with sodium polysulfide solution to yield a leach liquor of sodium thiosulfate, which is then purified, concentrated and crystallized
By dissolving sulfur in sodium sulfite solution & then crystallizing. It is also prepared from waste liquors obtained in prodn of sodium sulfide, liquors containing sodium carbonate & small amt of sodium sulfite & sodium sulfate in addn to sulfide.
