Pharmacology

Zonisamide is an Anti-epileptic Agent. The mechanism of action of zonisamide is as a Carbonic Anhydrase Inhibitor and P-Glycoprotein Inhibitor. The physiologic effect of zonisamide is by means of Decreased Central Nervous System Disorganized Electrical Activity.

How it is made

The reaction of 3-bromomethyl-1,2-benzisoxazole with sodium sulfite in methanol/water gives sodium 1,2-benzisoxazole-3-methanesulfonate, which is converted into 1,2-benzisoxazole-3-methanesulfonyl chloride. Treatment with NH3 gives zonisamide.
