DPU (Delivered at Place Unloaded)
Definition
The seller delivers the goods unloaded at the named destination. It replaced DAT in Incoterms 2020.
DPU at a glance
- Transport
- Any mode
- Risk passes
- At the named place of destination, after unloading
- Insurance
- No obligation, but the seller carries the risk until delivery
DPU is the only Incoterms rule where the seller must unload the goods at destination. Risk passes once they are unloaded at the named place, which can be any place, not only a terminal. The buyer handles import clearance and duties.
Use DPU only if the seller can actually organise unloading at the destination, which can be difficult for bulk liquids or dangerous goods that need special equipment.
