FAS (Free Alongside Ship)
Definition
The seller delivers the goods, cleared for export, alongside the vessel at the named port of shipment.
FAS at a glance
- Transport
- Sea and inland waterway only
- Risk passes
- When the goods are placed alongside the vessel at the port of shipment
- Insurance
- No obligation
Under FAS the seller places the goods alongside the buyer's vessel, for example on the quay or on a barge, at the named port. Risk passes at that point and the buyer pays for loading and sea freight.
FAS is mainly used for bulk and break bulk cargo. It is a sea and inland waterway rule and is not suited to containers.
