What is Beryllium fluoride?

Plain description, key identifiers and synonyms

Beryllium difluoride is the fluoride salt of beryllium (+2 oxidation state). In the solid state it exists as a glass, with four-coordinate Be2+ tetrahedral centres and two-coordinate fluoride centres. As a gas it adopts a linear triatomic structure and in the liquid state a fluctuating tetrahedral structure. In protein crystallography it is used as a mimic of phosphate. It is a fluoride salt and a beryllium molecular entity.

Uses and applications

What the substance is used for, by industry and function

Manufacture of beryllium and beryllium alloys, manufacture of glass, in nuclear reactors.

Intermediate in the preparation of beryllium, it is also sometimes used as an additive to welding and soldering fluxes because it dissolves metal oxides readily.

Production of beryllium metal by reduction with magnesium metal.

Most beryllium compounds, with the exception of beryllium oxide, have no commercial or technical use, and are only encountered in the production of beryllium metal as intermediary materials ... or as laboratory chemicals. (Beryllium compounds).

Industrial uses: Heat transferring agent, Intermediate.

Pharmacology

Beryllium Fluoride is a white colored, crystalline, inorganic compound that emits toxic fumes of beryllium oxides, hydrofluoric acid and other fluorinated compounds upon heating. Beryllium fluoride is mainly used to produce beryllium metal and alloys and is also used in the production of glass and nuclear reactors. Inhalation exposure to its dust irritates the nose, throat and lungs and can cause pneumonitis. Prolonged exposure can result in a chronic beryllium disease called berylliosis causing granuloma and fibrosis formation in the lungs. Beryllium is a known carcinogen and is associated with an increased risk of developing lung cancer. (NCI05)

How it is made

In the production of beryllium fluoride, beryllium hydroxide is dissolved in an ammonium hydrogen fluoride solution to produce ammonium tetrafluoroberyllate. Impurities can be precipitated as hydroxides. Upon concentration, ammonium tetrafluoroberyllate crystallizes from solution and is separated, after heating, it dissociates into ammonium fluoride and beryllium fluoride.

Prepared by heating ammonium fluoroberyllate (NH4)2BeF4.

By the thermal decomposition (900-950 °C) of ammonium beryllium fluoride.
