Chlorides and other halides

Uses are wide. Calcium chloride is used for de-icing, dust control and as a concrete accelerator, potassium chloride as a fertilizer and food salt substitute, ferric chloride and aluminium chlorides as water treatment coagulants, bromides as completion brines in the oil field, fluorides in dental care and aluminium smelting, and iodides in nutrition and pharmaceuticals. Grades include technical, food, pharmaceutical, reagent and feed.

Specify the form (anhydrous, dihydrate or hexahydrate, flakes, prills, powder or solution), the assay, insolubles, iron, heavy metals and moisture. Many halides absorb water, so packaging needs a moisture barrier. Sodium chloride is classified under HS heading 2501, potassium chloride usually under 3104 as a fertilizer, and most other halides under 2826 and 2827.
