By chlorination of acetaldehyde or paraldehyde (a trimer of acetaldehyde) in the presence of a chlorination catalyst with subsequent distillation.
Reaction of acetaldehyde with chlorine at 70-80 °C
The most important industrial production process is the chlorination of acetaldehyde or paraldehyde. Hypochlorination of 1,2-dichloroethylene yields pure dichloroacetaldehyde.
