Uses and applications

What the substance is used for, by industry and function

Algaecide, defoliant/desiccant, herbicide, plant growth regulator.

Aquatic herbicide to control submerged aquatic vegetation and algae in lakes, ponds, and irrigation canals.

Endothall has one biocide use to control mollusks and algae in cooling towers/systems.

Use classes: Herbicides.

Functional uses

  • Biocide

How it is made

Endothall is made by the condensation of furan and maleic anhydride ... The reaction is conducted at 35 °C and atmospheric pressure in the liquid phase. Isopropyl ether may be used as a reaction diluent. No catalyst is used and the reaction time is about 7 hours.

Endothal is made by reduction of the Diels-Alder condensation product of furan and maleic anhydride.

Furan undergoes the Diels-Alder reaction with strong dienophiles. Hydrogenation of the product resulting from reaction with maleic anhydride, followed by hydrolysis and neutralization gives a herbicide, endothall.
