Uses and applications

What the substance is used for, by industry and function

Resinous products, dyestuffs.

Derivatives of fluorene show activity as herbicides and growth regulators.

Chemical intermediate in numerous misc applications & in formation of polyradicals for resins.

Use classes: Petroleum components.

Pharmacological actions

  • Carcinogens

How it is made

From acetylene and hydrogen in red-hot tube ... From charcoal by boiling with fuming HNO3 ... From 2,2'-dibromodiphenylmethane on boiling with hydrazine hydrate in presence of palladium.

By reduction of diphenylene ketone with zinc, from coal tar.

High-temperature coal tar contains on average 2% fluorene, which is recovered industrially by coal tar redistillation or by direct removal of a fluorene fraction during primary coal tar distillation followed by recrystallization of the fluorene fraction (dephenolated and debased if necessary), e.g., from solvent naphtha or naphtha.

Fluorene can be isolated from a greater than or equal to 60% fluorene fraction by continuous countercurrent crystallization. It is possible to refine the technical product further by reaction with sodium or sodium amide. Alternatively, purification is performed with sulfuric acid and subsequent crystallization from methanol. Fluorene is also synthesized from acetylene in a red-hot tube in the presence of hydrogen. It can be distilled from charcoal in the presence of fuming nitric acid or from refluxing 2,2'-dibromodiphenylmethane with hydrazine hydrate in the presence of palladium. Reduction of diphenylene ketone with zinc also forms fluorene.
