Pharmacology
Formothion is a synthetic dicarboximide compound and organophosphate acetylcholinesterase inhibitor that is used as a pesticide. It is characterized as a viscous yellow oily liquid or crystalline solid, and exposure occurs by inhalation, ingestion, or contact.
How it is made
Made by the reaction of 2-chloro-N-formyl-N-methylacetamide with ammonium O,O-dimethyl phosphorodithioate.
Chloroacetyl chloride + N-methylformamide + O,O-dimethyl dithiophosphoric acid (amide formation/ dehydrochlorination).
Formothion is produced by reaction of the sodium salt of O,O-dimethyldithiophosphoric acid with N-methyl N-formyl carbamoylmethyl chloride.
