What is Insulin?
Plain description, key identifiers and synonyms
Therapeutic Insulin is a synthetic or animal-derived form of insulin used in the treatment of diabetes mellitus. Therapeutic insulin is formulated to be short-, intermediate- and long-acting in order to individualize an insulin regimen according to individual differences in glucose and insulin metabolism. Therapeutic insulin may be derived from porcine, bovine or recombinant sources. Endogenous human insulin, a pancreatic hormone composed of two polypeptide chains, is important for the normal metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins and fats and has anabolic effects on many types of tissues.

Pharmacology
Insulin is a pancreatic hormone that plays an essential role in regulation of blood glucose as well as lipid and carbohydrate metabolism. Both natural and recombinant forms of insulin are used therapeutically to treat type 1 diabetes. While insulin itself is not hepatotoxic and has not been linked to serum enzyme elevations or instances of clinically apparent liver injury, high doses including overdoses of insulin and glucose can result in hepatic glycogenosis and serum aminotransferase elevations.
How it is made
Extraction of the pancreas of slaughtered animals with acidified dilute alcohol, followed by precipitation with absolute alcohol, redissolution, precipitation with zinc chloride, & redissolution in water
Synthesis of human insulin: katsoyamis et al, j am chem soc 88, 164, 166 (1966), ruttenberg, science 177, 623 (1972) (from porcine insulin). ... Approaches to commercial synthesis: chem & eng news 52, 19 (april 29, 1974).
By use of porcine insulin as starting material, human insulin can now be synthesized with relative ease.
