Uses and applications

What the substance is used for, by industry and function

Electronic and optical applications, starting materials for growing single crystal solid-state lasers, high-temperature dry film lubricants in the form of ceramic-bonded coatings.

Has been used in low power fuses, as a catalyst for the manufacture of picoline, in glass coatings for infrared reflection, in low melting glasses, in phosphors for television tube screens, in activators for electroless plating of nickel on glass, in electroptical coatings in zinc oxide varistors.

Used in glass sealing disks for IR sensors, in wear resistant automotive shock absorbers, for the electroless deposition of lead, as a flux for brazing of aluminum and its alloys, in optical glass fibers for IR transmission, and in thin-film batteries.

How it is made

Prepd by treating lead carbonate or hydroxide with hydrogen fluoride and evaporating the soln, by mixing soln of potassium fluoride and lead acetate, by precipitation from the soln of a lead salt by hydrogen fluoride, by the action of fluorine on lead.[The Merck Index, Fourteenth Edition (2006)

Prepared by reacting lead hydroxide or lead carbonate with hydrofluoric acid, or by the reaction of lead nitrate with potassium fluoride.
