Meprobamate is rapidly absorbed after oral administration and has a duration of 3 - 4 hr. Its primary clinical use is for daytime sedation in anxious patients, but it is occasionally administered orally as part of a regimen of bedrest and physical rehabilitation for painful musculoskeletal conditions.
Meprobamate is an anxiolytic agent which has anticonvulsant, myorelaxant, and sedative properties, but it does not directly interfere with the GABA-receptor complex ... This carbamate derivative has been used for the management of anxiety disorders and tension states but has been superseded by benzodiazepines.

Pharmacology
Meprobamate is a carbamate derivate with hypnotic, anti-anxiety, sedative, anticonvulsant and some indirect muscle relaxant properties. Although the exact mechanism of meprobamate is largely unknown, it appears to act as a depressant at multiple sites in the central nervous system, mostly likely through the GABAergic neurotransmitter system, including the thalamus and limbic system.

/Meprobamate is/ prepared by reaction of 2-methyl-2-propyl-1,3-propanediol with excess phosgene and ammonium hydroxide.
