Uses and applications

What the substance is used for, by industry and function

In ionization chambers. For degreasing wool. Extracting oils from nuts, seeds, and flowers. ... Methylating agent. Has been used as fire extinguishing agent.

Methyl bromide's most prevalent use pattern is as a soil fumigant. It is also used as a post harvest treatment of commodities and structural fumigation. Structural non-food treatments (e.g., residential buildings) are reportedly no longer performed.

Broad-spectrum fumigant chemical that can be used as an acaricide, antimicrobial, fungicide, herbicide, insecticide, nematicide, and vertebrate control agent.

The primary use of methyl bromide is as a fumigant in soil to control fungi, nematodes, and weeds, in space fumigation of food commodities (e.g., grains), and in storage facilities (such as mills, warehouses, vaults, ships, and freight cars) to control insects and rodents.

Industrial uses: Intermediate.

Pharmacology

Methyl Bromide is a methyl halide, bromomethane, and bromohydrocarbon that is composed of one carbon, one hydrogen, and three bromine atoms. It is both manufactured and naturally produced by marine algae, and it has a role as a pesticide, a fire extinguishing agent, and in the synthesis of other chemicals. It is characterized as a colorless gas with a chloroform-like odor at high concentrations. Exposure occurs by inhalation, ingestion, or contact.

How it is made

The commercial manufacture of bromomethane is based on the reaction of hydrogen bromide with methanol. The hydrogen bromide used can be generated in situ from bromine and a reducing agent. A new continuous process for the production of bromomethane from methanol and aqueous HBr in the presence of a silica supported heteropolyacid catalyst has recently been described. Bromomethane can also be coproduced with other organic bromine compounds by the reaction of the solvent methanol with hydrogen bromide that is formed as byproduct.

The processes include coproduction of bromomethane with bromostyrenes, tribromophenol, and especially tetrabromobisphenol A.

Bromomethane ... is produced from methanol and hydrogen bromide, which is generated in situ from bromine and a reducing agent like sulfur or hydrogen sulfide. The commercial process is conducted by continuously feeding streams of liquid bromine, elemental sulfur, and methanol to a reactor maintained at 75-85 °C under a slight positive pressure. Methyl bromide vapor (99% purity) is continuously withdrawn from the reactor overhead system and scrubbed free of dimethyl ether by contacting the gas with a sulfuric acid scrubber. ... By operating at a higher temperature and pressure than described in other similar processes, this process allows for good control of the exothermic reaction, retards the formation of dimethyl ether, and produces methyl bromide in high yield and purity.
