Uses and applications

What the substance is used for, by industry and function

Pyrethrins are botanical insecticides ... used in these four general ways: (i) pre-harvest and postharvest uses on many agricultural crops, (ii) direct and indirect treatments of livestock animals and premises, (iii) treatments of commercial and industrial facilities and storage areas where raw and processed food/feed commodities are stored or processed, and (iv) wide area mosquito abatement use in areas which include aquatic areas. (Pyrethrins).

Because of their safety, pyrethrum extracts are used extensively in stock sprays, aerosols, industrial sanitation sprays, and to protect stored food in warehouses. (Pyrethrins).

How it is made

Pyrethrum concentrates are prepared by extracting the flowers (Chrysanthemum cinerariaefolium and C. coccineum (Compositae)) with petroleum ether, ethylene dichloride, methanol, acetone, or acetic acid. The extracts are purified from waxes by reextraction with nitromethane or methanol, and absorption on activated charcoal, to produce a 25% pyrethrum concentrate containing about 10% pyrethrin I, 9% pyrethrin II, 2% cinerin I, 3% cinerin II, 1% jasmolin I, and 1.1% jasmolin II.

The pyrethrins are localized in the secretory ducts of the achenes ...

The flowers are hand picked when four or five rows of disc florets are open, and each flower contains about 3-4 mg pyrethrins. After drying in the sun or mechanically, the flowers are ground and extracted with hexane. Evaporating the hexane yields a dark, viscous oleoresin concentrate containing about 30% pyrethrins. The concentrate is either diluted with plant or mineral oil to 25% pyrethrins (oleoresin extract) or purified by methanol extraction and charcoal treatment to produce a dewaxed and decolorized refined extract.

Obtained by extraction of chrysanthemum flowers native to Kenya, Ecuador and Japan. The solvent used is a hydrocarbon of the kerosene type. Pyrethrum is also made synthetically.
