Uses and applications

What the substance is used for, by industry and function

Preparation of vanadium trichloride, vanadium dichloride, and organovanadium compounds.

As mordant in the dyeing industry.

The early copolymerization catalysts developed in the 1960s are still widely used for the EP (ethylene propylene) and EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) production. They are based on vanadium tetrachloride VCl4 or vanadyl trichloride VOCl3 as transition metal ingredients, diethylaluminum chloride or triethylaluminum as cocatalysts, and various modifiers, mostly chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons.

Industrial uses: Catalyst.

How it is made

For the production of VCl4, oxygen-free vanadium compounds such as vanadium carbide or vanadium carbonitride are reacted with chlorine gas.

/Vanadium/ tetrachloride is prepared by chlorinating crude (vanadium) metal at 300 ยฐC and freeing the liquid from dissolved chlorine by repeated freezing and evacuation. It is now made by chlorinating V2O5 or VOCl3 in the presence of carbon at approx 800 ยฐC.

Ferrovanadium/ferrophosphorus + chlorine (chlorination).
