About driers and siccatives

Driers, also called siccatives, are metal carboxylates that speed the oxidative curing of alkyd paints, oil-based varnishes, printing inks and linseed oil products. Primary driers such as cobalt, manganese and iron catalyse the reaction of the oil with oxygen at the surface. Through driers such as zirconium, strontium and bismuth help the whole film cure, and auxiliary driers such as calcium and zinc improve hardness and pigment wetting. The carboxylic acid is usually 2-ethylhexanoic acid or neodecanoic acid.

Driers are sold as solutions with a stated metal content, for example cobalt 10 or 12 percent, and they are often combined in a drier package. Anti-skinning agents such as methyl ethyl ketoxime are added to stop a skin forming in the can.

Cobalt carboxylates are classified as reproductive toxicants in the EU, and methyl ethyl ketoxime also faces stricter classification, which has pushed formulators to manganese and iron-based driers and oxime-free anti-skinning agents. Ask for the metal content, solvent, colour, viscosity and the regulatory classification of each product, and test drying time with your binder before switching.
