About UV absorbers and light stabilizers
UV absorbers and light stabilisers protect coatings, plastics, adhesives and the substrates beneath them from sunlight. UV absorbers such as benzotriazoles, hydroxyphenyl triazines and benzophenones convert UV radiation to heat. Hindered amine light stabilisers (HALS) trap the free radicals formed by light and oxygen, and they work well together with UV absorbers.

Automotive clearcoats, wood stains, industrial coatings, agricultural films, outdoor plastics and adhesives for transparent substrates all use light stabilisers. The right combination depends on film thickness, binder chemistry, the pH of the system, because acidic catalysts can deactivate basic HALS, and the required service life.
Ask for the chemical type, active content, volatility, compatibility with your binder, absorption range and recommended level. Liquid and waterborne forms are available for easy incorporation. Some benzotriazole UV absorbers have been identified as substances of very high concern in the EU because of persistence, so check the regulatory status and choose alternatives where needed.
