About in-can and dry-film biocides

Biocides protect paints, adhesives, sealants and other water-based products from microbial spoilage, and they protect dry paint films from mould and algae. In-can preservatives include isothiazolinones such as BIT, MIT and CMIT/MIT, bronopol, formaldehyde releasers and pyrithiones. Dry-film biocides include IPBC, zinc pyrithione, OIT and DCOIT, terbutryn and other algicides, often encapsulated to slow leaching.

Waterborne paints are especially vulnerable because they contain water, thickeners and other nutrients that bacteria and fungi feed on. Spoiled paint can smell, lose viscosity, produce gas or change colour, and facades without film protection can grow mould and algae within months.

In the EU, biocidal active substances are approved under the Biocidal Products Regulation for specific product types, and treated articles must use approved actives. Some actives require labelling because they are skin sensitisers. Ask for the active substance content, product type approval, recommended dose, compatibility with your formulation and pH range, and any labelling consequences. Check registration rules in other regions as well.
