About hydroxides and bases
This group covers the alkalis and bases used to neutralise acids and raise pH. The largest are sodium hydroxide, sold as caustic soda flakes, pearls or 48 to 50 percent lye, and potassium hydroxide. Calcium hydroxide and calcium oxide, known as slaked lime and quicklime, magnesium hydroxide, lithium hydroxide, ammonia and ammonium hydroxide, and the hydroxides of barium and strontium are included too.

Bases are used in pulp and paper, alumina refining, soaps and detergents, textiles, water and waste water treatment, food processing, biodiesel, battery cathode production and many chemical syntheses. For caustic soda, buyers specify the production route, since membrane grade has lower salt and mercury than older processes, together with sodium carbonate, chloride, iron and heavy metal limits. Battery grade lithium hydroxide has tight limits on sodium, calcium, sulfate and magnetic impurities.
Strong bases are corrosive and generate heat when dissolved, so they need closed packaging that keeps out moisture and carbon dioxide. Lye travels in tank trucks or IBCs, solid grades in lined bags. Sodium and potassium hydroxide fall under HS heading 2815, lithium and other metal hydroxides under 2825, and ammonia under 2814.
