About pH adjusters and neutralizers
pH adjusters and neutralisers raise or lower the pH of water to protect equipment, optimise treatment and meet discharge limits. Alkalis include caustic soda, lime (calcium hydroxide and quicklime), soda ash, sodium bicarbonate, magnesium hydroxide and ammonia. Acids include sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, phosphoric acid, citric acid and carbon dioxide gas.

Drinking water plants raise pH to reduce corrosion, coagulation works within a narrow pH window, waste water plants neutralise acidic or alkaline effluent, and power plants and reverse osmosis systems control pH to prevent scaling and corrosion. Magnesium hydroxide slurry is popular for acidic waste water because it buffers and is safer to handle than caustic soda. Carbon dioxide offers a gentle way to lower pH without adding sulfate or chloride.
Ask for concentration or assay, impurities such as mercury in caustic soda and heavy metals in lime, solids content and viscosity for slurries, and drinking water certification. Concentrated acids and alkalis are corrosive dangerous goods that need suitable storage tanks, dosing pumps and personal protective equipment.
